Between September and March, Kamitei Foundation supporters Tom Claeren and Yanniek Peters spent time at several Kamitei-supported primary schools in Northern Tanzania. Their plan was to observe the Kamitei Internships for Teaching Excellence (KITE) program in action and assist teacher interns in applying Kamitei’s new framework for developing teaching effectiveness and student engagement.

In November, Tom and Yanniek visited the Kilimatembo community, which includes the Kilimatembo, Gilala, and Marar primary schools. They noted that these schools were well-organised, with most teachers delivering lessons of a relatively good standard. However, Gilala was disappointing as teachers there often ended the school day at 11:00 am – a common issue in rural schools.

February took Tom and Yanniek to the Kainam community, home to three more schools: Kainam, Jihoudi, and Hareabi. These schools also maintained a good standard and they found it extremely heartening to see how eager the teaching interns were to keep improving.

“The joy and gratitude of the students were the most memorable aspects of all our school visits,” said Yanniek. “Thetudents’ enthusiasm increased every time we visited their school and particularly when we used games to help their mathematics and reading lessons. The teachers, especially the teacher interns in the KITE program, were eager to show us how Kamitei’s training is changing the way they teach.”

“This program has been a very good move,” added Tom. “Having also visited government schools without teacher interns, we noted there is a stark difference between those with and without Kamitei’s support. Our time in Tanzania showed us the positive impact that our international supporters are making on the lives of young Tanzanians by investing in Kamitei’s education programs.”
